Subject: Re: Fwd: recovering?scorched tree
Ian
I have attempted to put together a report for you this morning,..
What I can say is that the tree is this Sycamore you have sent photographs
of appears to be of normal vitality. It is near to a much larger Ash tree,
that has suppressed crown spread of the Sycamore in a north and west
direction. The Height of this tree is between 6 to 8m with a crown spread
of 3 to 4m, biased towards a south and eastwards direction.
Some fire damage is evident on the north side of the trunk between 1 and 3m
from ground level some branches also appear affected. This damage is
occluding well and there is every reason to believe that the tree will make
fully occlude these wounds within around five years.
I note this tree is used as a mooring attachment, a use which is inevitable
given the location. This should be discouraged to avoid damage to the trees
phloem tissue (bark). I suspect there may be slight damage by the rope
tied around the tree presently, but this appears minimal and limited to a
small proportion of the trees trunk circumference. The effect of the rope
will not have any lasting influence on the trees vitality, provided the
rope is removed fairly soon before it restricts the trees incremental
growth, or results in further mooring use.
To conclude, as this matter does not concern Surrey County Council
interests and has already cost this Authority a great deal of my time and
effort , I am terminating my involvement at this point, but I do wish you
every success in your attempts to save trees from unnecessary removal..
Kind regards
